In order to engage and involve parents as part of the LCAP priorities, parents need to be equipped with information and resources that will help them navigate through the school system, work collaboratively with the school, and advocate for their students' right to a safe and secure learning environment. Each high-quality and interactive session can be provided in English and in Spanish on the following topics:
Parent Rights & Responsibilities
This workshop highlights the rights and responsibilities of parents/guardians as partners in education to help achieve academic, social and emotional success for their children. Attendees will learn about their responsibility to ensure that their children are receiving an appropriate education, of the laws that protect the interests of their children, and how to be more actively engaged in the school community. Why School Attendance Matters
In order to successfully meet the Common Core State Standards and develop college and career readiness skills, it is critical that students attend school every day and on time. This workshop will address the laws related to compulsory education and truancy, as well as provide strategies that parents/ guardians can utilize at home to promote school attendance. Attendance Options
Parents/guardians may wish to have their children attend a school that is not their school or district of residence. This workshop will explain the various attendance options within and outside the district of residence available to families as well as the processes by which families may exercise these options. Student Wellness
In order for students to be academically successful and engaged in their learning, physical and mental barriers to learning must be addressed and/or removed. This workshop will help parents/guardians understand the connection between student wellness and academic success, as well as ways in which they can support healthy habits (exercise, nutrition and mental health) at home. High School Graduation & Beyond
In order to compete in today’s global economy, students must develop knowledge and skills that will serve them well in high school and help them successfully transition to a productive career. This workshop will help identify ways in which parents/guardians can partner with schools to ensure that their children are on a path to high school graduation and a wide range of postsecondary options, including college. |
Student Discipline
Student discipline has shifted from a focus on “zero-tolerance” and imposing exclusionary measures towards the use of “other means of correction” to minimize learning loss and disengagement. This workshop will explain the changing discipline climate and provide an overview of the suspension and expulsion processes as prescribed by the California Education Code, identifying the rights and responsibilities of which families need to be aware. Bullying and Cyberbullying
Bullying and cyberbullying have significant short- and long-term effects on the education, health and safety of students. Parents/ guardians will learn how to identify signs of bullying and cyberbullying, as well as how to work with schools to effectively address incidents of bullying and cyberbullying involving their children. Social Media & Its Dangers
In today’s world, communication is increasingly done electronically and schools are feeling the impact of the misuse of technology on and off campus by students. This workshop will educate parents/guardians about some of the issues related to the misuse of technology (e.g. cyberbullying and sexting) and the potential for youth to become targets and victims of human trafficking and predators, and illustrate why it is crucial for parents/guardians to be partners with the schools to safeguard children. Drug Use & Other High Risk Trends
It's difficult to stay updated on all the risky trends that children and youth are engaged in from one day to the next, particularly when so much of these dangerous behaviors are promoted through social media, where little to no supervision is available and where some trends resurface within a few short years. This workshop provides information regarding the latest trends, including drug use, how parents/guardians can identify signs of risky behaviors, and the available resources to help them address these behaviors. |
